Housing in Carbon County

The inside story on rent prices
Source: US Census Bureau - ACS 5 Yr 2023

Almost half of renters in the United States pay 1/3 or more of their monthly income for rent (third column above). Compare that with rent in Carbon County and Montana in the first two columns. The optimal rent to household income ratio is 25% to 28% or less. When you pay more than 30% of your income towards rent, your ability to pay for food, transportation, health care, education, and savings becomes increasingly difficult.

Red Lodge: A Mountain Paradise

Originally the Crow Indians considered this a sacred place for worship and hunting. The town of Red Lodge, Montana was established in 1884, then the the Rocky Fork Coal Company opened its mine here in 1887 which caused the town to boom, attracting immigrants from Europe.

The coal boom declined with the Great Depression followed by a tragic mine disaster in 1943. The town shifted towards tourism and agriculture and now serves as host to recreational enthusiasts and travelers visiting Yellowstone National Park.

Recreation in Southeastern Montana

The Beartooth Mountains rise up as the largest land mass above 10,000 feet in the continental United States. The route to Yellowstone National Park from Red Lodge is called the Beartooth Highway and offers stunning vistas.

The area provides numerous hiking trails. Summer brings opportunities for horseback riding, fishing, and whitewater rafting along the Stillwater River and Rock Creek. In winter, enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Red Lodge Mountain, or explore scenic trails by snowshoes or cross-country skiing.
