Idaho Falls: A Key Trade Center in Idaho
The area was originally home to the Northern Paiute and Shoshone-Bannock tribes. In the 1800s, settlers arrived, drawn by gold and trade. The area became a key stop in 1864 with the construction of Taylor’s Bridge. Initially named Eagle Rock, the town was renamed Idaho Falls in 1891 to highlight its availability of water.
The city flourished with irrigation and railroad development, becoming a key trade center for agriculture and industry. A hydroelectric dam was built in 1911, creating the waterfalls that are now a city landmark.
Recreation in Southeastern Idaho
Idaho Falls lies in the Upper Snake River Valley not far from Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. There are many trails for hiking, as well as trails for ATV and snowmobile enthusiasts. Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are northwest of Rexburg in a beautiful area to explore with many activities nearby.
To the southeast you will find the turquoise waters of Bear Lake with boating, fishing, hiking and swimming areas. Closer to home you can spend time at Lava Hot Springs with their outdoor soaking pools.
